Updated three-door Thar gets AXT, LXT and ZXT trims, upgraded suspension, electric power steering and six-airbag protection for the hard-top model
Mahindra has launched the 2026 Thar in India, with prices starting at Rs 10.32 lakh, ex-showroom. The updated three-door SUV brings more powerful engines, revised styling, improved cabin materials and substantial changes to its suspension and steering. A notable addition is the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel automatic with rear-wheel drive, expanding the choices for buyers seeking an automatic Thar without four-wheel drive.
The lineup now comprises AXT, LXT and ZXT trims. Alongside the new variants, Mahindra has introduced additional off-road equipment and safety features, making this a comprehensive update to the three-door model.

New Variants, RWD Diesel Automatic
The entry-level AXT is offered with the 1.5-litre D117 CRDe diesel engine and a manual gearbox. This engine is also available in LXT and ZXT trims. It produces 87.2 kW, equivalent to approximately 116.9 bhp, and 300 Nm of torque.
The larger 2.2-litre mHawk diesel and 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol engines are offered in LXT and ZXT trims. The diesel develops 150.1 bhp (111.9 kW) and 330 Nm, while the petrol produces 159.6 bhp (119 kW) and 330 Nm. Increased power and torque for both larger engines.

The addition of a rear-wheel-drive mHawk diesel automatic broadens the Thar’s appeal for everyday driving. Buyers can now choose the larger diesel engine with automatic convenience in an RWD configuration, alongside the SUV’s four-wheel-drive offerings.

M_GLYDE 4G Platform And New Rear Suspension
A major part of the update is the M_GLYDE 4G platform, accompanied by a Pentalink rear suspension with a Watt’s link. Mahindra has also introduced DaVinci damping with frequency-dependent damping, focusing on improving ride comfort and body control.

These changes give the updated Thar a stronger mechanical story than its exterior revisions alone suggest. Mahindra’s presentation highlights the suspension’s ability to balance control over body movements with a more comfortable response to road imperfections.
Electric power steering is another significant addition. Mahindra claims lower steering effort, improved response around the straight-ahead position and better returnability. Together, the steering and suspension changes are aimed at making the Thar easier to live with during everyday use.

Refinement has also received attention. Mahindra quotes idle noise levels of 42 dBA for the petrol and 45 dBA for the diesel, alongside reduced cabin NVH.
Terrain Modes And Electronic Differential Lock
The updated Thar’s off-road equipment includes a rear electronic locking differential that can be activated at the push of a button. It locks the rear wheels together to help maintain drive when traction differs between them.

Sand, Snow and Mud terrain modes adjust traction control, steering assistance and accelerator response. On automatic versions, the modes also alter transmission shift behaviour to suit the selected terrain.
The presentation additionally highlights front and rear brake locking differentials and a transfer case with 4H and 4L. Exact equipment availability will depend on the selected variant and drivetrain.

Six Airbags, Four Disc Brakes And ESP 9.3
Mahindra has highlighted six-airbag protection for the hard-top model. This comprises front airbags and four HPTS airbags, described as providing Head, Pelvis, Thorax and Shoulder protection for occupants in both rows.

Other safety updates include four-wheel disc brakes and front parking sensors. The standard ESP 9.3 suite incorporates Vehicle Dynamics Control, traction control, rollover mitigation, hill hold control and hill descent control. Brake disc wiping and Electronic Brake Refill are also listed in the presentation.

New Grille, Wider Track And 19-Inch Alloys
The updated Thar gets a five-slot grille with prominent Thar badging, LED headlamps and C-shaped LED DRLs. LED ice-cube fog lamps and cornering lamps further revise the front lighting setup.
New front and rear bumpers, LED tail-lamps and a fresh 19-inch alloy wheel design complete the exterior changes. Mahindra also highlights a wider track, giving the SUV a broader stance while retaining its familiar three-door silhouette and tailgate-mounted spare wheel.

Truffle Brown Cabin, Wireless Charging
Inside, the Thar gets Truffle Brown leatherette seats, soft-touch door panels and stitched trim. Front armrests and wireless charging add to the convenience equipment. The changes focus on cabin finish and comfort while retaining the familiar dashboard layout. The top ZXT trim is highlighted with 15 additional features.
