The Jaecoo J5 is a B-Segment Crossover SUV developed by Chery’s premium sub-brand Jaecoo. The vehicle is already on sale in global markets, and JSW will bring it to the Indian market. It has a large 13.2-inch touchscreen with a digital instrument cluster. A 540-degree camera, a large panoramic sunroof, and a premium, minimalist interior layout. For safety, the vehicle comes with a Level 2 ADAS suite. Ventilated front seats and wireless charging features are also present. The most interesting aspect is the pet-friendly feature, with amenities for pets. The vehicle gives off a mini Range Rover vibe, with a tall, upright stance that evokes Land Rover models. Signature Slim LED DRLs, vertically stacked headlamps, and 18-inch aero-optimised alloy wheels give off a modern, rugged look.

Globally, the J5 comes with multiple powertrain options. In some markets, it is available with a 1.5 Litre turbo petrol engine, while in other markets, it comes with a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine. There is also a strong hybrid option. As JSW is in an EV and PHEV push, let’s expect both electric and hybrid versions for our market. The Hybrid option could get the 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine combined with an electric motor (SHS-H system), producing a total of 221 horsepower and 295 Nm of torque. For the EV, it could get the 61 kWh battery with a claimed 460 km range with a 200+ bhp front-mounted motor, which could take the vehicle from 0-100 in about 7.3 seconds. Fast charging up to 130 kW could also be expected.

The Jaecoo J5 represents JSW’s strategy to bring global Chery products to India in a localised manner. By placing it under a good price slab, it targets buyers looking for an SUV with great practicality, road presence and efficiency of a modern urban SUV. The J5 could rival the Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Curvv EV and the MG ZS EV. The expected on-road price could be 19 lakh to 23 lakh. As for the launch, the vehicle is speculated to launch in late 2026 or early 2027.

The Jaecoo J5 is a decent SUV in its segment, with a premium build and all the bits to take on the competition. While the more established rivals offer proven service network and higher resale assurance, J5 is positioned as a more premium alternative for those looking for a vehicle in the 19-23 Lakh price bracket. The vehicle has the potential to be a strong contender, as it falls within an affordable price range compared to its rivals.
