India’s Cheapest Car: Tata Nano Coming Back?
The Tata Nano was discontinued years ago, but it still has a following among automotive enthusiasts. For some time, we have seen several AI-rendered images going viral across the internet, suggesting that the Nano might be making a comeback. However, Tata Motors has not really announced anything officially yet.
But, this time again, a conversation with Tata Motors’ India Design Head sparked the revival of India’s cheapest car.
Tata Motors India Design Head Ajay Jain was recently asked by ABP Auto Live whether the Nano could make a comeback. The official then responded, saying, “Try Karenge.” he also added that Nano is an incredibly innovative car that put India on the map, and it would be a pleasure to put the Nano back on the map again”. He also said that if Tata Nano makes a comeback, it could possibly be an electric version of the hatch.
While this is not a sure-shot confirmation about the revival of India’s iconic hatch, it is clarified that this report is Mr Jain’s personal expression on the model revival and should not be interpreted as an indication of future product.

Will Nano Get The Recognition Now?

Being termed “India’s Cheapest Car” back then was the biggest challenge the brand faced. While it made four-wheeler ownership more accessible, many buyers opted for larger hatchbacks instead of the Nano, limiting its success. However, at present, there are several small cars available on the market, like the MG Comet, and the VinFast VF3 is coming too; the revival of the Nano nameplate could be Tata’s hammer against international automakers.

What Modern Things Could The Nano Get?

If the Nano nameplate gets revived, it won’t be the world’s cheapest car again. Moreover, instead of it being powered by a petrol engine, we could see it in an electric avatar, equipped with several modern features and safety tech.
While it’s too early to comment on anything, we expect that if Nano EV ever comes, it will deliver a driving range of around 200km, with the Jayhem Neo’s 17kWh battery pack. With the Nano, Tata could again go with the Tiago EV approach, offering a clean interior, with the features that are really needed, without packing in everything available.
That said, even though it won’t be available at a mere Rs. 1 lakh this time, if Nano makes a comeback in the EV market, we could see it possibly going up against the likes of MG Comet and priced as one of the most affordable EVs available in the country.
