Comfortable 7-Seater Gets Cheaper
We’re talking about the MG M9, which recently got more accessible, with a cut of Rs. 9.95 lakh! This massive price drop is due to a new Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) scheme MG has just rolled out. For starters, you no longer have to pay for the battery pack as part of the car’s price. You buy the car, MG keeps the battery, and you pay for it separately based on how much you actually drive.
With BaaS, the MG M9 now costs Rs 69.99 lakh (ex-showroom), down from its regular price of Rs 79.95 lakh (ex-showroom); that’s an upfront saving of close to Rs. 10 lakh. Of course, nothing’s ever entirely free. You’ll also pay a battery rental fee of Rs. 8/km, which is added based on your usage. So if you drive less, you pay less; drive more, and the math changes.

Lower Price Doesn’t Mean Compromise
The car itself remains the same. You still get the 90 kWh battery pack under the floor, with a claimed range of 548 km, and a front-mounted electric motor producing 245 bhp and 350 Nm of torque. The features and comfort remain the same, including a 13-speaker JBL sound system, panoramic sunroof, electric sliding doors, and 64-colour ambient lighting. The second row has Ottoman seats that can be electrically adjusted in 16-ways, along with Ventilating, Heating and Massage functions. So, the BaaS scheme only changes how you pay for the battery, not what you get with the car.

Should You Buy It?
If you want to keep your upfront investment smaller, the BaaS is a solid way to get behind the wheel of the MG M9. However, before you decide, do some quick math on your monthly running: if you cover a lot of kilometres each month, the per-km charge can add up, and buying the car outright with the battery might still work out cheaper in the long run.
