The Indian government has been strict with its motives – to phase out petrol and diesel. If the laws against 10-year-old diesel cars and 15-year-old petrol cars weren’t strict enough, we are soon going to see even stricter rules. 100% Ethanol Fuel Coming Soon?
E20 petrol has already worried many people. Some users have reported rusting of components, while others have complained about poor fuel efficiency. All automakers have assured their customers that E20 won’t affect them, but issues persist nonetheless. And if you think 20% Ethanol was bad, wait till you hear Nitin Gadkari’s (Road Transport and Highways Minister) ambitions.
Gadkari revealed that India is struggling with fuel supply due to the war in the Middle East. So to counter such critical situations, India should aim for a higher ethanol blend. Reports had suggested that India is looking towards E25 petrol soon, but Gadkari has talked about a much bigger number – E100 or 100% ethanol blend. As per Gadkari, it would help in reducing pollution while minimising reliance on imported fossil fuels.

100% Ethanol – Should You Be Worried?
Don’t be worried just yet. E100 is a long way off, and its integration will be gradual. Currently, the government is working on E25 petrol, and then we could move on to E85. Not to mention, Brazil has already implemented 100% ethanol blends, and the government could learn from Brazil in making it a success in India as well.
Along with customers, automakers will also be worried. They would need to hurry in bringing E100-compliant tech to India. Maruti has started working on it already with its upcoming flex fuel cars, and other manufacturers would need to follow. That is why Gadkari has revealed that the automakers have opposed a move to higher ethanol blends.
