Chevrolet Exits China
While Chevrolet won’t be making new cars for the Chinese market, existing customers will continue to get uninterrupted access to maintenance services and spare parts
In a major decision, General Motors (GM) has announced that Chevrolet will be stopping production for the Chinese market. However, it will continue to be active in China, focusing on existing customers and export-oriented production. In India, Chevrolet had taken a similar decision by ending its sales operation in 2017.
Growing demand for NEVs, local Chinese brands
In China, Chevrolet had commenced operations in 2005. Over the years, the brand built a massive fan following with products like the Cruze. Chevrolet registered sales of around 767,000 units in 2014, which was its highest ever annual sales in China. However, with factors such as the introduction of three-cylinder engines and a growing preference for NEVs and local brands, Chevrolet’s sales in China gradually declined. By 2025, annual sales had dropped below 9,000 units.
Top 10 Cars in China – July 2026
Current consumer preferences in China become clearly evident if we look at the list of top 10 passenger cars sales data. In July, all the top nine cars are BEVs. Some of these also have PHEV variants. The only ICE-powered car in the list is Toyota Corolla Cross, ranked 10th with sales of 14,510 units. Moreover, eight out of the top 10 cars in China in July are from homegrown brands like Geely, Leapmotor, Xiaomi, Fang Chengbao, BYD, Changan Qiyuan and Li Auto.
This clearly demonstrates the preference for NEVs and homegrown brands in the Chinese market. Tesla and Toyota are the only two overseas brands in the list. Tesla Model Y continues to be a popular option in China, ranked 3rd in the list with sales of 25,158 units in July. Notably, Tesla Model Y is the costliest car in the top 10 list.
Chevrolet to focus on exports, NEVs
While Chevrolet will be stopping retail sales operations in China, parent company GM has stated that Chevrolet will continue production operations in China for export markets. Chevrolet China will focus on markets outside of the United States. These include locations like the Middle East, South America, Africa, Asia Pacific and Mexico. Chevrolet’s export operations from China will continue to be supported by GM’s global sales and service network.
In the first half of this year, Chevrolet exported 6,930 units from China to various global markets. This is YoY growth of 6.9%. Chevrolet’s sustained commitment for its China operations is evident with the 20-year strategic renewal agreement signed between GM and SAIC Motor. Both companies will continue to operate under the existing joint venture.
As part of their long-term plan, SAIC-GM announced that they will be introducing at least 30 NEVs by the end of this decade. One of the primary focus areas will be the electrification of GM’s core brands like Cadillac and Buick. Using their robust capabilities in engineering and manufacturing, the SAIC-GM JV is looking to explore opportunities beyond China.
