Shillong: In a major push to end recurring transit disruptions along the vital regional corridor, high-level talks between top transport officials from Assam and Meghalaya have been scheduled for September 10 to address persistent commercial transport grievances and establish long-term operational stability. The upcoming summit follows widespread complaints from Meghalaya-based commercial vehicle operators, particularly tourist taxi drivers, who have routinely reported harassment, security threats, and operational bottlenecks while navigating through Assam toward Guwahati. In a bid to secure a permanent resolution, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar announced that representatives from tourist taxi associations of both states will participate in the discussions alongside the Transport Commissioners of Assam and Meghalaya. The administrative initiative was finalized after an extensive stakeholder consultation in Shillong chaired by Dhar. The strategy session brought together key administrative and law enforcement leadership, including top officials from the Transport and Home departments, the Deputy Commissioners of East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts, the Superintendent of Police, and local tourist taxi leaders.

During the meeting, taxi associations detailed systemic issues that have lingered for months and years whenever Meghalaya-registered commercial vehicles cross into Assam territory.

Characterizing the drivers’ security and operational concerns as legitimate, Dhar stated that the primary objective of the September 10 joint session is to build a synchronized coordination framework between both state administrations to guarantee unhindered passage.
Providing an update on current ground conditions, the Deputy Chief Minister confirmed that the blockade recently enforced in Assam has been called off, allowing cross-border commercial traffic to resume normal operations. While unrestricted transit continues in the interim, officials emphasized that comprehensive policy guidelines and permanent security protocols will be formulated based on the outcome of the joint September 10 proceedings.
