Across international markets, Chery Jaecoo J5 ICE version has turbo petrol and strong hybrid powertrain options
As part of JSW Motors-Chery collaboration, a range of NEVs will be launched in four years. Multiple test mules have been spotted and various patents have been filed in recent times. One of these is the JSW Jaecoo J5 SUV, which was earlier spotted in its EV form. Latest spy shots reveal that even the strong hybrid version of Jaecoo J5 could be introduced in India.

Hat tip to automotive enthusiast Ved Shinde for sharing the spy shots. Most of the exterior features of JSW Jaecoo J5 ICE model are largely the same as the EV version spied earlier. While the EV version has a closed-off grille, the ICE version can be seen with a traditional grille design with vertical slats. Other features like the sleek lighting elements, circular wheel arches and aero-optimized alloy wheels are also common across both versions.

Jaecoo J5 has a boxy profile, with only a slight taper in the roofline. The SUV uses traditional door handles and has a flat beltline. Door panels have a smooth, sculpted profile, which complements the SUV’s premium aesthetic. At the rear, Jaecoo J5 has horizontally stacked wraparound LED tail lamps, a prominent roof spoiler and a raked windshield. Tail lamps are expected in a connected format, featuring JSW Motors’ new brand name in the centre.

Inside too, most of the features of Jaecoo J5 ICE are largely the same as seen with the EV model. The large, centrally mounted 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system instantly gets your attention. Jaecoo J5 sold internationally has features such as a panoramic sunroof, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and dual zone climate control.

Other highlights include a wireless phone charger, an 8-speaker Sony sound system and a powered tailgate. Equipment on the India-spec Jaecoo J5 is expected to closely match that of the model sold in international markets. However, there can be some variations to suit Indian conditions and local tastes and preferences.
Just like the EV version spotted earlier, this ICE variant of Jaecoo J5 can be seen with an all-black interior. Seats come with contrasting white stitching and piping for a sporty feel. The flat dashboard enhances the clutter-free aesthetic and also ensures an undisturbed view of the road ahead. Jaecoo J5 offers a robust safety package, with features such as 7 airbags, a 540 degree surround view camera and a comprehensive ADAS suite.

Jaecoo J5 – Powertrain options
Across global markets, Chery Jaecoo J5 ICE version is offered with powertrain options of turbo petrol and strong hybrid. The turbo petrol variant uses a 1.5-litre engine that generates 156 hp and 275 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 7-speed DCT and a CVT.
Jaecoo J5 strong hybrid variant combines a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor and a 1.83 kWh lithium-ion battery. Total output is 224 hp and 295 Nm. Rated fuel efficiency is 18.9 km/l. Since JSW Motors is focusing on NEVs, it is likely that Jaecoo J5 ICE version will be using the strong hybrid powertrain in India.

Considering the highly competitive midsize SUV segment, Jaecoo J5 can deliver better results with multiple powertrain options. Current bestsellers in this space like Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Sierra and others have already utilized this strategy with great success. Jaecoo J5 EV will take on rivals like Creta Electric, Sierra EV, Maruti eVitara, Vinfast VF6 and Mahindra BE 6.
